Chiropractic
is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good
health, in part, depends upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially
the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body).
“Chiropractic,” comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning
“effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of
many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to is
environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and
chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body
which is functioning improperly.
Doctors
of chiropractic have been trained to treat a wide range of health issues. Traditional methods of consultation,
physical examination, case history and
x-rays are used by the
doctor. In addition, a structural
evaluation is performed to help arrive at a individualized course of treatment for
patients.

Chiropractic
physicians have been trained to evaluate the structure and function of the spine
to detect subluxations. The spinal column is composed of four bones
which begin at the base of your skull and end just below your waist. Thirty one pairs of spinal nerves
extend down the spine and exit though a series of openings. These nerves form a complicated network
which influences every living tissue in the body.
Displacements
or misalignments of the spinal column resulting from accidents, falls, stress,
sports and a multitude of other factors can cause irritation to spinal nerve
roots. Chiropractic teaches that reducing or eliminating this irritation will
result in your body operating more efficiently and comfortably.
Exercise,
proper nutrition and lifestyle modifications are all important aspects that
chiropractic stresses to promote physical and mental health. While
chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery, we do refer patients to medical
doctors when those interventions are necessary. Today, chiropractors, medical
doctors, physical therapists and other health care professionals all work
together in helping the patient achieve optimal health.
